SUPERIOR — The team at Serenity Spa and Salon will host a free hair care class for dads in the community at 5:30 p.m. May 23. Geared toward fathers with children in elementary school, it will focus on how to maintain their child's hair.
“We’re starting it off with lice prevention and detection. That’s huge for these school-age kids,” said Raya Horst, who owns Serenity with Jessica Matson.
The class will move on to scalp and hair hygiene, including proper washing, drying and detangling techniques, before teaching some light styling options.
“Moms shouldn’t be the only ones having to style the hair,” Horst said.
The class is limited to 10 dads to ensure it’s a one-on-one experience with a stylist.

“We can walk them through different situations, they can ask questions, they’re not going to be put on the spot in front of everyone. It’s a little more personalized,” Horst said.
Children are welcome.
“And this would be fun for dads with kids to go do something different. We’ll have snacks here. They have a little night out with them,” Matson said.
Registration is required. Dads can sign up by calling 715-969-7700. The class will take place at the salon, 1705 Tower Ave.
The idea for the class came from personal experiences. Horst said she taught both her husband and her ex-husband how to braid her daughters’ hair.
“My ex-husband is in the military, and he taught some of his soldiers,” she said. “If a bunch of military men can start braiding hair, so can the dads in our community.”
Knowing the proper way to wash, dry and detangle hair, and which products work best, can lead to fewer tangles and tears, Matson said.
There was a time when brushing through her son’s long hair would make him cry. A change of product made a noticeable difference.

“And now we comb through his hair, and it's totally fine,” she said.
Depending on the response they get, the pair plan to hold additional free classes for dads, foster families, older siblings and moms. If community members want to walk through that door, Horst said, they want to open it.
“It’s a fun thing, and I hope the community eats this up because we love to educate and reach out and meet the people in the community,” Horst said.
The two friends stepped into the ownership role at Serenity a year ago this month. The business has grown from three employees to 10 in that time thanks to community support.
“It’s time for us now to do our giving back, now that we’re settled into our lives a bit more,” Matson said.
In addition to the classes, the pair has continued to support area nonprofits such as Harbor House, the Center Against Sexual and Domestic Abuse, and Penneys from Heaven.
“An amazing first year; excited for our future,” Matson said.
