Bad hair days, beware: the best hair serums are the ultimate weapon to ward off every hair concern. “I like to think of serum for my hair as I would think of serum for my face,” says Shelley Gregory, stylist and Kérastase Pro-Club color expert. “It is one of the steps in your routine you do not skip.” Gregory recommends using a hair serum in addition to your other hair care favorites, as it will complement those products and boost their benefits.
According to stylists, adding a hair serum into your routine is one of the most effective ways to make your tresses healthier, more manageable, and look its very best. “Hair serums are great for all hair types,” explains Bianca Hillier, celebrity colorist for Nomad Model Management in Los Angeles. “If you have the right serum, it will help smooth, nourish, protect, and seal the hair.”
“Behind the chair, I use hair serum for a finishing touch after a blow out. It seals the hair cuticle down and will leave your hair with a polished, frizz-free style,” explains Rachel Redl, hair stylist at Aveda on 3rd in St. Petersburg, Florida. Redl notes that hair serums are universal and versatile products that have multiple uses. They can be used as a finishing product after a blow dry or air dry, as an overnight treatment to give the hair extra love, as a pretreatment before shampooing, or as a scalp treatment for a dry scalp.
How we chose the best hair serums
We consulted stylists Gregory, Hillier, and Redl, the Good Housekeeping Institute (GHI), which tests countless products to ensure a fair and accurate representation of each item, and sifted through tons of online reviews to find the best hair serums available.

How to choose a hair serum
When shopping for a hair serum what you'll choose “really depends on what benefit your hair and scalp needs,” Gregory says. Since hair serums are such versatile products, your specific hair type and concerns will help determine what you’ll need to look for. Generally, avoiding sulfates and parabens are key to prevent dryness.
“Look for hair oils and serums with more naturally derived ingredients,” Redl recommends. “They will provide the most benefits to the hair without coating hair with chemicals.” Redl also recommends steering clear from serums that contain synthetic perfumes as those will actually dry out the hair, which is usually the opposite of what you might want to achieve with a serum.
Ingredients like natural oils, glycerin, biotin, proteins, antioxidants, and silicones are all great to look for in a hair serum, but there are a few caveats. Silicones are great for smoothing the hair, but the fix is “topical and temporary,” Hillier notes. Silicones sit on top of the hair rather than entering the interior of the hair, so make sure to properly wash your hair if using products with silicones. Hillier also warns against products with lots of protein: “Protein will give your hair strength, but if you’re over-proteinizing the hair it will become hard like dry spaghetti or like hay. Most times, hydration and moisture is what you need.”
