Today was special for the kindergarteners at St. James in Gulfport, they got to cut their teacher’s hair. Mrs. Moran then donated that hair to children in need.
Mandy Moran’s fellow teachers at St. James joke that she puts Miracle Grow in her hair — because her curls fully grow back by the time her kindergarteners cut them again.
She’s done this for five years. The few kids to receive the honor of taking scissors to Mrs. Moran’s hair read upwards of a hundred books each over the last month. Collectively, the entire class read more than a thousand.
Moran gets a free makeover, the kids get their fun, and children with hair loss get a donation. Everyone’s a winner here. “It’s a good opportunity to show kids they can give back in other ways, and to increase their reading skills.”
She’s popular at St. James, and the kids engage with her every word. In the classroom Friday, they beamed with adoration for their teacher.
We asked 5-year-old Louisa her favorite part about being in Mrs. Moran’s class. “Because I get to do fun stuff, and do other stuff… and have fun.”
When Mrs. Moran told us her kids had read more than a thousand books, we couldn’t help but wonder how and why. “They love to read, especially at this age. They’re really eager to want to learn as much as they possibly can, and this was an opportunity to involve them and their families.”
“Read for the kids, let them read to you, you can read the same book 10 times, it doesn’t matter. Just read.”
