Sometimes, a dating rumor is a red herring. While the internet has been especially concerned with whether or not Channing Tatum and Zoë Kravitz are canoodling after they were spotted together twice in New York City last week, the real inquiry of interest here should be: when did Channing Tatum start dressing so sick?
The actor looked like he rolled right off the Tompkins Square Park asphalt as he and Kravitz walked around the East Village. (Which again, may or may not mean anything since they’re currently working together on Kravitz’s directorial debut—a genre thriller titled, naturally, Pussy Island.) If wearing a similar outfit twice could be considered a “uniform,” Tatum’s new fondness for wide-leg carpenter pants, grungy Chuck Taylors, and a big ol’ graphic tee feels both highly covetable and entirely situation-specific. As they strolled, the actor alternated between walking and riding Kravitz around one of his little BMX bikes (yes, plural—Page Six made sure to point out that there were two separate bikes involved). And get this: it appears Tatum is even matching the bikes to the fits. The first all-black ride called for a tonal black/navy look, while the second bike’s wheels were a suspiciously similar hue to the duo’s iced coffees. Coincidence, too, can be a red herring.
(Plus, a post on Tatum’s Instagram Story, which he recorded while riding his tiny bike over the Williamsburg Bridge, confirms that the neckline of his slouchy West Coast Choppers tee is, in fact, riddled with holes. Delightful!)
Tatum, who is 41, has previously worn pretty similar variations on a more polished theme for much of his career, reflective of his rise during the late aughts: a tapered jean, a tight T-shirt, and a fitted leather jacket. (Lest we forget the period of time when his public persona hinged on him not wearing a shirt at all…) His new look aligns with the current skate renaissance, and its corresponding mattress-in-a-kitchen, sexy-on-the-outside, malt-liquor-on-the-inside look. But if Tatum really wants to stay on the trend, perhaps Kravitz should revoke her recommendation that the actor stop wearing Crocs. As GQ’s Danielle Cohen wrote just two months ago, “Tatum, who reigned supreme hunk during a more earnest era in pop culture, leans more rugged than grungy. But Crocs demand grunge.” Looks like he’s heeding that call.
