  • Hoda Kotb nixed her blonde highlights in favor of a new dark brown hairdo on Tuesday’s Today with Hoda and Jenna.
  • The Today co-anchor revealed the hair color change was due to a “happy accident” after a keratin treatment left her hair “fire-engine orange.”
  • After a quick color correction early in the morning, Kotb was left with stunning dark brown hair.

We’re used to seeing Today co-anchor Hoda Kotb sport light brown locks with blonde highlights and caramel undertones, but she recently revealed a new look on-air that happened from a “happy accident.”

The 57-year-old chatted with co-host Sheinelle Jones, who sat in for Jenna Bush Hager on TODAY with Hoda and Jenna, Tuesday morning rocking dark brown locks that are perfect for winter. And Jones was as surprised as the audience to see Kotb’s change in appearance.

“Let’s talk about your hair,” Jones kicked off the conversation. “Here’s the thing, it’s a little darker than we’re used to and no one told me. So, I just walked on the set this morning and was like, ‘Oh!’ I like it. It’s winter.”

Kotb laughed and explained to Jones that though she’s happy with her head of hair, the look happened from a mishap during a hair treatment. “Some things are like happy accidents,” she began.

Kotb explained that her entire family was coming to visit, so she wanted to do a keratin treatment to keep her hair looking frizz-free and shiny.

Keratin is a structural protein found in hair, skin, and nails and in many styling products to help strengthen hair. Keratin treatments performed by hairstylists can transform hair into smooth, shiny, and frizz-free strands. But, keratin treatments don’t actually use keratin at all. Instead, they use a solution of formaldehyde (a known carcinogen) derivative or glyoxylic acid to break the protein bonds and reseal them into a straighter position. The results can last from three to six months, celebrity hairstylist Andrew Fitzsimons told Harper's Bazaar.

Because her go-to salon was closed, Kotb asked one of the hairstylists she knows to stop by her home to perform the treatment. But when it was done, things didn’t look exactly how Kotb expected.

“Three hours later, I got up and it was like fire-engine orange. Like Bozo orange,” she said. Kotb clarified that the stylist “is amazing” and the mishap was likely due to something “funky in the chemicals.” And after Jones clarified with Kotb that she was not trying to color and do the keratin treatment at the same time, Kotb emphasized how wild her hair looked.

“It was one big orange. I was like an orange Q-Tip,” she joked.

The next morning, Kotb called the stylist back and asked her if she could perform a color correction before the morning’s taping of Today. At 3:15 am, the stylist came by to fix Kotb’s hair before the show, and the anchor was left with a stunning dark brown ’do.

“She just started putting stuff on it, and it’s dark brown now,” Kotb said. Jones complimented the look, and we sure think it looks amazing, too!
