Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer review: It's worth the $400 price tag - SFGate

jembutikal.blogspot.com

I initially got the Dyson Supersonic hair dryer to test it on three different hair types, but wound up only testing it on two (my own and a close friend’s). While $400 is a lot to pay for a hair dryer, I found the Dyson can diffuse my 28” long, curly hair in just five minutes, and with less damage than a traditional hair dryer.

To say I'm impressed would be an understatement. But continue reading to get a better idea of just how impressive the Dyson Supersonic is.

What is the Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer?

The Dyson Supersonic is supposed to be a magical hair dryer that comes with more promises than any other on the market. For example, Dyson markets the Supersonic as "engineered to protect hair from extreme heat damage, with fast drying and controlled styling to help increase smoothness by 75%, increase shine by up to 132% and decrease frizz and flyaways by up to 61%.*"

Those are a lot of essentially made-up numbers. But Dyson vacuums have proven to be worth their cost, so why wouldn't the same go for their hair tools? I was skeptical of the claim that the Supersonic increases shine by 132%, because that seems like a subjective thing to quantify. However, I went into the review interested to see if the claims about decreasing frizz and protecting from heat damage were true.

The hair dryer has a V9 motor (which is stronger than my current Dyson vacuum) that spins up to 110,000 rpm, propelling 13 liters of air up to the amplifier every second. It's designed with intelligent heat control, too, to measure airflow temperature to prevent extreme heat damage.

The Dyson hair dryer comes with five attachment tools. Each is designed for specific styling and ideally, any hair type can be styled using this hair dryer and one of the included attachments.

  • Flyaway attachment: The flyaway tool is the newest of the Supersonic hair dryer attachments. It lifts longer hair and hides flyaways to give a smooth, shiny finish.
  • Wide-tooth comb: This attachment tool helps shape and lengthen curly and textured hair.
  • Diffuser: This tool helps gently dry curly or wavy hair while maintaining texture.
  • Gentle air attachment: You can use this attachment to diffuse hair, by using a gentle, cooler airflow.
  • Styling concentrator: This attachment has controlled airflow and can be used for precision styling.

You'd think a $400 hair dryer would be easy to operate. It is, but the Dyson Supersonic doesn't operate like most hair dryers. You need to learn how to use it first.

For instance, when using the diffuser tool, you're supposed to pool your hair in the diffuser and press it up to your scalp to dry. Dyson has created a series of videos showing how to use the hair dryer, in case you're confused (like I was).

Dyson hair dryer pros

  • Fast drying results
  • Hair feels less damaged
  • Easy to turn & off while using

When I say fast, I mean fast. I have 28-inch-long, thick, curly hair. That's a lot of hair. Diffusing my hair took me five minutes. That's a game-changer when the weather is colder and I can't let my hair air dry for half the day. A blowout took me about 20 minutes (and I am not an expert). I'm sure it would've been faster if I were any good at blowouts.

Dyson isn't lying about hair feeling less damaged after using the Supersonic, either. Again, I'm not a hairstylist, and I can't confirm the percentages that Dyson claims. However, I know what my hair feels like when I use a straightener (fried) and how it feels after using the Dyson hair dryer (not fried).

As you may know, when blow-drying your hair, you often need to turn the device on and off to either reposition your head, grab a new section, or simply because your arms are tired. The Dyson Supersonic will turn back on to the same setting you had it on when you turned it off. That's such a tiny, simple feature that makes life easier while styling your hair.

Dyson hair dryer cons

The cost is the only con, in my opinion. As I've said, $400 is a lot of money. If that's too expensive for your budget, I'd check out the sales portion of this article (a few sections below) to see where you can buy the Dyson hair dryer for less money.

I used the Dyson Supersonic on my friend Amanda's hair, which is curly 3B hair, and my own 2C hair. We used only the diffuser on her hair, but I used all of the attachment settings for myself, except the wide-tooth comb, as that isn't designed for my hair type. I only remembered to take photos after using the diffuser and concentrated styler attachments, so please forgive me there. Using both attachment tools left my hair looking and feeling excellent.

You can see in the before photo (directly above), my hair was lifeless. My curls were all but gone. It had been previously damaged by some straightening. However, after a hair mask, some TLC with good shampoo and conditioner, and using the diffuser attachment, my hair was given new life again.

My friend Amanda (before and after photos below) absolutely loved the Dyson. Her hair knots easily and in her before photo, it looked pretty rough. Her curls had tangled together and lacked the definition she wanted. Her hair was even quicker to dry than mine and looked so defined and soft after she finished styling it.

Is the Dyson hair dryer worth it?

Yes. I believe this price is worth it for two sets of folks: People who like to style their hair and people who cannot wait for their hair to air dry. You can dry your hair fast (and style it nicely) without frying it. That's a rare occurrence with hair tools, as heat usually goes hand-in-hand with damage. Whatever Dyson has cooked up in the lab is pretty magical.

Dyson hair dryer sales

Due to their popularity, Dyson hair products virtually never go on sale. However, Dyson just introduced Owner Rewards, which is a special offer for the first time ever. Anyone who has bought a Dyson product previously will get an email offer for 20% off any Dyson product, including the Dyson hair tools.

If you don't own a Dyson, but are a loyal Ulta or Sephora shopper, you can still score some savings on Dyson products if you've earned points.
