This Shampoo and Conditioner Helped Me Realize What My Hair Could Be - Esquire.com

I'll be frank, I'm not much of a splurge guy. I'm the type of gentleman who shows up to your party with a very good 14 dollar bottle of wine because, on the up and up, I think that's a plenty fine bottle of wine. I keep an eye out for Levi's sales. I love an Amazon Prime Day.

To know this makes what I'm about to say all the more important: I have found a shampoo and conditioner that are worth spending extra money on. Damn good shampoo and conditioner that smell like a subtle herb garden and gives my coiffure the confidence of a tequila-drunk college student. I'm talking about Malin + Goetz shampoo and conditioner: the mountaintop of my haircare regime.

The love affair started about nine months ago, when I got my first bottle of each. I'm a wash-it-once-a-week type of guy just because my hair has conditioned itself in that way, meaning that a 16 ounce bottle can last you a good while. I've never been a loyalist to any kind of hair product before, but maybe that's because I hadn't run into something good enough to pledge allegiance to.

A Scent That Lingers

The first selling point for me was the scent. I don't dabble much in the way of heavily floral-smelling perfumes, and I loathe anything that has a scent described as "Arctic Mist" or "Glacier Rush." I've never been to the arctic, but those smells scream "communal bathroom" to me. Instead, the signature shampoo comes in peppermint, which has just enough peppermint extract that the shampoo tingles—just enough to let you know that it's there.

The conditioner features a cilantro scent. A small dollop goes a long way, releasing a subtle but complimentary scent that ties in perfectly with the peppermint. Y0u smell like a beautiful herb garden, without worrying that you smell too much like anything.

Performance to Back It Up

Cilantro Conditioner, 16 Ounce

My hair is pretty fine, when it comes to texture. That typically means that when I wash it and don't put product in it—at least following most shampoo/conditioner combos—I have about 36 hours where I look like I'm constantly recovering from an electric shock. I didn't run into that with Malin + Goetz. The peppermint shampoo is light, never leaving that kind of "shampoo excess" that I've run into with a lot of other brands.

The conditioner is the real GOAT of the duo though. There's never a frizz period, with the conditioner getting me immediately back to a place where my hair can be managed with or without product. Obviously, this is more of a fine hair situation, so you'll find your own routine, but the benefits remain the same. A combination of coriander oil, sunflower oil, and shea butter protects and hydrates your hair. Also, after doing a bit of research, you can also use it as a leave in conditioning alternative.

Again, I'm not particularly one to recommend the top shelf unless the top shelf is really doing the work. But when I show up to your house with my 14 dollar wine and my on-sale Levi's, you can bet my hair is going to be in check (and will smell good, too).
