Queen of the slip dress Kate Moss attended her DJ friend Fat Tony’s Mayfair book launch last night wearing a quintessentially Kate evening look: a floor-length black spaghetti-strap dress with Saint Laurent mules peeping out of the sweeping silk, and a sheer puff-sleeve blouse shrugged over the top.

Quietly elegant and resolutely classic, Kate aced low-key evening wear during a balmy Monday night in London. While revellers spilled out into the streets on “Freedom Day”, Kate looked serene in her languid silk slip and gently knotted pussy-bow blouson. Executing a picture-perfect bow is a sartorial nightmare for some, but Moss keeps things loose and insouciant in a way that only she can. Her bohemian styling sits at the opposite end of the spectrum to fellow pussy-bow blouse lover, the Duchess of Cambridge, for example.

Kate Moss’s romance with the slip dress has been well documented; from the 1993 sheer number she wore to an Elite model agency party that is now ingrained in the public psyche, to her myriad turns in Alexander McQueen and John Galliano confections whose deceptively simple appearance belies the craftsmanship behind them. Slips are part of Moss’s eternal-chic aesthetic (see also: ballet pumps, trench coats, skinny jeans and silk scarves). Should Tony’s autobiography launch have taken place in December, or even in a year’s time, Moss might have worn a riff on the same timeless look. Always effortless and never boring, even in its comforting predictability, Kate’s enduring style is what makes her a true icon.
