It’s the little “Happy Jewels” that make a Christmas. Memories from past holidays make every season special. My storehouse recently grew.

I was chortling about being recently chided for giving my college sweetheart a powerful hair dryer instead of an engagement ring. It’s an annual ribbing. The signs of Yuletide were plentiful: Decorations everywhere, pickups with a red nose attached to a mega-grill, and the guy beside the road twirling a huge red arrow with “TREES,” in large green letters, planted in the middle.

He was dancing, twirling, and bobbing his tree lot sign. I was waiting for the light to turn from — what else — red to green. I was mesmerized, but not from his Santa hat or beaming face. His sign was bobbing in perfect rhythm to the tune blaring from my radio, Burl Ives crooning, “Have a Holly, Jolly Christmas.” Either his earbuds were tuned to my radio or it was a Christmas Miracle!

The hair dryer is now used to dry wet boots, but it must have worked: We will celebrate 54 years of marriage on the 29th of December.

The arrow dancer? He gave me another Christmas jewel: “Holiday Music Sounds Best When Shared!”
