The Air Force will update its hair policy for women to account for differences in hair texture.
On June 25, women's hair worn in a bun, braid, or ponytail will be allowed to extend six inches to the right and the left and protrude six inches from the point where the hair is gathered, the Air Force said Friday in a statement.

Previously, under hair updates announced in February, the hair could not extend beyond the width of the head. However service members decide to wear their hair within the guidelines, they will need to be able to wear their headgear properly.
"Change doesn't happen overnight, and sometimes, it takes another iteration to arrive at the best solution," said Air Force chief of staff Gen. CQ Brown. "This updated guidance represents meaningful progress. The feedback we received from our Airmen highlighted the need to reevaluate the policy and ultimately, make it more inclusive."
