When I meet Bobby Gillespie — who has spent a long time leading the kind of rock’n’roll life that few marriages come out of intact — it is at the studio of his wife, the fashion stylist Katy England. The frontman of Primal Scream has walked round the corner from the house in north London where he lives with England and their two teenage sons. Everyone I know who has met Gillespie describes him as a devoted family man. Yet we are here to talk about Utopian Ashes, an album of country-soul duets with the French singer Jehnny Beth, whose self-explanatory titles — Remember We Were Lovers, Living a Lie, You Can Trust Me Now — articulate a marriage in crisis.
