3 Things Everyone Should Know About Stress-Related Hair Loss - SELF

While nothing feels better than a good cleansing and conditioning (We love the Viviscal™ Gorgeous Growth Densifying Shampoo and Conditioner, which gently cleanses while nourishing the hair), don’t leave your refreshed strands soggy. Wet hair is weak and vulnerable. For this reason, brushing knots out when it’s damp is a big no-no; too much tugging can result in hair loss. Instead, aim to detangle before you shower. Dr. Houshmand also recommends using a microfiber towel when drying, which is not only easier on strands, but wicks water away much faster than a standard cotton one.

You may also want to consider including supplements like Viviscal™ Hair Growth Supplements into your daily routine, which contain a mix of marine collagen, hair-healthy vitamins and minerals to help nourish hair and transform thin hair to thick in as little as 3-6 months* when taken twice a day and stimulate growth to power up your strands. Research based on 10 clinical trials, one of which was published in the Journal of Clinical Aesthetic Dermatology, revealed that women with thinning hair who used Viviscal™ not only enjoyed hair growth, but greater hair volume and thickness and scalp coverage too.

When it comes to tools, we cannot say this enough: limit heat. We’re talking hair dryers (yep, take a break from blowouts!), curling irons, flat irons, you name it. Too much heat can wreak havoc on hair, zapping hair of its strength as well as increasing your risk of hair loss. Frequent relaxers and straightening treatments can also be a culprit of compromised hair, simply because you are adding chemicals that change (and weaken) its structure. Dr. Houshmand notes that this pandemic—while a major stress-related event itself—has given those who work from home the perfect opportunity to give the heat styling a rest and try various products to help determine what their hair really needs to thrive.

Just as important as what you put on your hair are the styles you choose to wear. According to the American Academy of Dermatology Association, hairstyles that involve constant pulling (think too-tight, high ponytails or braids) can also cause strands to break or fall out. Look, we’re not saying you can’t rock these styles, but it’s better to switch up your ‘do every now and then. Trust us, your hair will thank you.

The Importance of Self-Care

The more we can establish self-care rituals that can help reduce overall daily stress, the better off we—and our hair—will be. “Having a good self-care routine goes back to wellness and making time for your mental health,” says Dr. Houshmand, who recently participated in a panel for SELF’s virtual Checking In series, “Beauty Rituals as Self-Care: Glow Inside Out,” letting folks in on all of her skin- and hair-care secrets. For Dr. Houshmand that means a multi-step skincare routine, which includes spritzing her face with hydrating rose water followed by using a steamer for a few minutes. “Those 5-10 minutes I don’t answer the phone, check social media, or my email. That is my time to decompress,” she says. Other ways to practice self-care, according to Dr. Houshmand: a five-minute meditation, going for a walk, or doing something fun (and socially distanced) with a friend, like exercising outside.

A little self-care for your hair can make all the difference too, especially as fall gives way to winter, because cooler temperatures can cause damage or breakage to hair. So whether it’s slathering on a hair mask to help score shinier, softer and, yes, stronger hair, showing your scalp some TLC with a tension-busting massage that will also increase blood flow, circulating essential nutrients to the hair follicles; or sleeping on a silk pillowcase (which not only feels amazing, but also reduces split ends), these little indulgences are an easy way to relax and enjoy “me” time that doubles as big time stress busters.

And don’t forget: Healthy hair starts from within, so if your diet isn’t up to par, you can’t expect the condition or strength of your hair to be either. “You want to optimize your diet. Make sure your protein intake is adequate because it is a building block for the hair,” says Dr. Houshmand. She also notes that she likes that Viviscal™ contains AminoMar®, “which is a marine collagen complex that actually helps with the hair diameter and hair shedding,” she says.

The bottom line: Being more mindful when it comes to reining in your stress levels can not only help you reclaim your hair but also bring you back to a healthy sense of self.
