TYRONE, Ga. — A local mother claims her daughter’s hair was ripped out of her scalp while at childcare. It happened at La Petite Academy in Tyrone.

Talia Salter said her little daughter was in pain when she picked her up at La Petite Academy in Tyrone back in February.

“They pulled me into the office and told me, ‘Hey, Nola had an accident today and it involved her hair being pulled and it’s a small spot in her head,’” Salter said.

But Salter said the bald spot in her daughter’s hair was far from small. She said the school told her, her daughter got stuck on a hook inside the classroom.

“The hook is very big. It’s a very big hook, I didn’t understand it went under her braid in a ponytail and snatched her hair completely out,” Salter said.

That’s a question, she’s been asking and trying to figure out since February.

“I asked them, if they were able to give me the owner’s phone number, so we could see some type of video footage. I asked them if they had the braid, they said they threw it away. The spot was very clean, so I was worried, that it probably been shaved,” Salter said. “When I got to the school, they said, ‘We were just about to call you. It’s the end of the day.’”

She said that was around 5 p.m. to be exact.

“I don’t know what time it happened. I don’t know how she reacted,” Salter said.

Salter said she wants the school to be held accountable.

Channel 2′s Larry Spruill reached out to the academy, to find out if that will happen. They released this a statement saying:

“We take our responsibility as caregivers very seriously. We work hard to provide a safe and nurturing learning environment, following strict policies and procedures to ensure we comply with regulatory requirements for the well-being of the children.

“On Feb. 16, shortly before pick-up time, we became aware that a child’s braid had unfortunately been pulled out accidentally. We followed our protocols and notified the family. We conducted a thorough internal review to confirm what occurred as well as partnering with state childcare licensing, and addressed this matter according to the findings.

“Our review determined that the child’s braid had been accidentally caught as the child was playing near the coat area. There was no indication that protocols were not followed. Two weeks later, the parent revisited the matter with us again. We reviewed it with her and after our discussion, regrettably the family chose to seek care elsewhere.

“We wish them the best and remain committed to providing outstanding care for the families we serve.”
