NASHVILLE — Horse owners beware. The Nash County Sheriff’s Office has reported the theft of horse hair right from the animals.

Unknown perpetrators are cutting off the tail hair from horses in Nash County pastures, according to information from the sheriff’s office.

“Apparently there is a high demand for horse hair and they are selling the hair,” a post on the sheriff’s office Facebook page states.

Horse hair theft in North Carolina isn’t new.

The Camden County Sheriff’s Office reported in March that thieves had sheared the tail of a show horse named Thunder. The department said the hair could be used to make wigs, art projects and fishing line, according to the Associated Press.

Horses’ tails are considered the animals’ main line of defense against biting insects that can carry disease.

Horsetail hair is sold by the pound and fetches as much as $400-$500 for white palomino hair.

The hair is used in many everyday products, including baskets, belts, brushes of all types, carpet, cloth, curlers, fabrics, fishing lines, furniture padding, hats, lariats, fishing nets, jewelry, braided horse bridles, upholstery cloth, violin and cello bows, whips and wigs, including extensions for humans and show horses, according to the Benton County Enterprise in Warsaw, Missouri, which reported on horse hair theft in 2017.

Local authorities have received several reports and are asking the public’s help in identifying the thieves. Anyone with information can call the Nash County Sheriff’s Office at 252-459- 4121 or Twin County Crime Stoppers at 252-977-1111.
