In a recent Cosmopolitan reader poll, 29% of those who answered said they have fine hair – and I definitely fall into that category. It runs in my family; my mum, two sisters and I all have identical hair texture: naturally straight, light and pretty damn fine.

My hair and I have a love-hate relationship. I’ve always been grateful that it grows quickly, giving me the freedom to play with the length and not worry if I’ve chopped off a bit too much, as it will be back in a month. My issue, however, has always been that it doesn’t have the luscious bounce of Kate Middleton’s locks.

This was a particular struggle for me as a teen. Think back to the 00s when ‘scene’ kids were a thing (just Google it, Gen Zs). It was all about having huge hair – the bigger it was, the cooler you were. I would backcomb mine within an inch of its life, pretty much slaying a can of hairspray every day (OK, that’s slightly dramatic, but it paints the picture).

Fast-forward to my early 20s, where I slowly phased out the backcombing. With the rise of Instagram, social media trends changed the way I approached my hair. I put the hairspray down (sort of) and found new ways to make my hair appear thicker – although curling it with straighteners every day was not the kindest thing to do.

Nowadays, I reserve the tools for going out out – I’m all too familiar with the ragtail split ends you get from overuse – when I mix it up between loose curls or mermaid waves using my waver, or backcomb the ends slightly to form a Molly-Mae-esque bun. Day to day, I just blow-dry my fringe and roots upside down (a Cosmopolitan reader poll found that 60% of those who answered do this too), use Pantene Pro-V Hair Multiplier for a thickening effect and then leave the ends to dry naturally. I also love an embellished headband or cute, purposely skinny plaits.

Over the years, I’ve dabbled in various volumising shampoos and conditioners and recently tried Pantene Lift ’N’ Volume collection. Pantene discovered that the ‘fine’ hair type has 50% less protein than thicker hair, which leaves it prone to falling flat pretty quickly. This explains why, when humidity hits my hair, it feels thinner than ever, slicked to my head like Kim K’s wet look – minus the glamorous intention.

I am one of those people who washes their hair *pauses for dramatic effect* every day. I know. But a beauty editor once told me that the rule of avoiding everyday washing is a myth, because it totally depends on your hair type. So with that in mind, I’ve been using the Lift ’N’ Volume Thickening Silicone Free Shampoo and Sulphate Free Conditioner daily. They infuse hair with nutrients, and no silicones means the shampoo won't weigh hair down. The fragrance, which smells like a summer rose garden, also lingers blissfully behind in my bathroom. Result? My hair looked noticeably fuller after the first wash (even my BF commented that it looked thicker).

The product I have a real soft spot for, though, is the Hair Multiplier Hair Thickening Treatment. Packed with micro boosters, it gives an instant lift that normally only a salon blow-dry can achieve. I simply apply it to wet hair, spritz three times along my parting, massage it into my scalp, then section up my hair and spritz and massage some more.

It doesn’t hurt to know that this treatment promises to give me the look of 6,500 more strands. I couldn’t count, but it’s certainly given me that ‘great hair day’ every day.
