Hair And Make-Up Artists Share How To Look Great On Camera - elle.com

Taking a great picture on command can be a challenge for even the most photogenic among us. And while we’re big believers that looking and feeling comfortable is always the most important step to nailing the perfect shot, there’s no harm in getting a few pointers from those who help people look their best on camera for a living.

Here, we ask make-up artist Zoë Taylor and hair stylist Pål Berdahl, who worked on our ‘An Extraordinary Year’ shoot with ghd in the current January issue of ELLE, for their expert tricks of the trade.

A clean start

Shiny, camera-ready hair starts with a clean base, says Berdahl. “Wash the hair in the morning or day before. Detangle your hair in the shower with conditioner and a wide tooth comb. When you’re out of the shower, squeeze hair with a towel, don't rub it.”

He also advises avoiding putting any moisturising products near the roots, which can easily make hair look limp or greasy. “You can add moisture to the mid-lengths and ends if they're dry, and you can counteract oiliness in the roots by adding dry shampoo to the roots."

Go the extra mile

‘Your skincare is as important as the make-up,’ says Taylor. Exfoliating and using a hydrating mask before a big day of photos will mean that your skin is plumped and primed for your base application. ‘Make-up should be applied and blended well – take the time to do that and it will perform well on camera,’ advises Taylor. ‘I always make sure the base colour is perfect and blended beautifully, as this can really show up in photography. I think shine is great, but I still powder the T-zone, as this helps control it there while still allowing the rest of the face to look fresh and glowing.’

Amp up the colour

Taylor recommends emphasising your features, as flash photography can make any colour you apply look more washed-out than it does in real life. ‘Eyes, lips and cheeks all need a little extra help for the camera,’ she explains. ‘Using eyeshadow will make your eyes appear bigger and help to soften any hard lines. Lips should always be lined, even if it’s just a natural colour.’

Quality matters

'Healthy hair shows up on camera, so using high quality tools is important to crucial to keep hair strong and nourished,' Berdahl shares. The ghd platinum+ hair straightener is equipped with heat sensors and protective plates to evenly maintain the optimum styling temperature from root to tip, for a salon-smooth finish without the damage.

Tools are the key to finishing off even a natural-looking, says Berhahl, who uses the ghd Helios hairdryer on-set to achieve a flawlessly smooth blow-dry finish in record time. 'Using hot tools will help smooth the cuticle as they work to create a more polished finish for the camera,' he explains.

Smooth it down

‘Fuzzing up the hair or shaking it out looks great for real life, but you need to be very careful doing this for film, because stray hair shows up more on camera,’ explains Berdahl. ‘Rather, you should lay the hair down naturally, push it behind the shoulders and let it sit clean.

‘I would also make sure the cuticles are properly sealed, whether by heat or simply pressing moisture into the ends. Just be careful not to put too much product in. The balance between oily and dry is very fine, and everybody has different needs.’

Be yourself

‘I always ask models about their own regimen when it comes to hair,’ says Berdahl. ‘It’s important because clients are always the best source of information for their own hair.’

Above all, if you’re happy with your look it will make you feel more comfortable in front of the camera, which is why Taylor says not to overthink things and do what makes you feel best. ‘Ultimately, it's about expressing yourself,' she says. 'Beauty is, after all, in the eye of the beholder.’
