There is not a single ounce of doubt that Rob Pattinson is the epitome of cool. First of all, he's Batman. Kay. Second, his style is truly the coolest kind of British style you can have. Everything is a little oversized, a bit undone, but ultimately cool as hell. This is his signature move: trying just hard enough to make it feel like he didn't try at all. Among that penchant for cooly undone style? This man's hair.

Robert Pattinson has extremely good hair and everyone knows it. He's the rare breed that can have it long and tousled for the day, but then pushed back and polished for a red carpet (you know, back when we had those). He's had it pretty long hair and he's had it buzzed, and he's had it every length in between. It's the kind of hairstyle you might feel inclined to emulate because it is just that solid of a look.

We talked to Melissa DeZarate—a celebrity groomer who works with stars like KJ Apa and Henry Golding—to give us some insight into how to replicate Robert Pattinson's glorious hair. First, some tough love: "Rob is a very much a "less is more" kind of guy," she says. "He is naturally gifted. This is his hair." That is to say, something that we all must accept at some point: Your hair won't always look like the style you're trying to emulate. "It's important to lean into your natural hair texture," she says, "but you can certainly take some tips from his look in general."

Here are 8 tips to achieving every seriously cool Robert Pattinson hairstyle, including some key hair products to complete the look.

Invest in a Haircut (a Good One)

The first step to any good style? A good, solid haircut. "To really get the hairstyle you're going for, you have to start with the cut," says DeZarate. "You may have to wait to get that really good haircut, if you're going for something longer. But it's worth the wait: When your haircut works for your hair texture, all you have to do is roll out of bed throw a little product in."

If you're shopping around for a cool, undone style—a la Rob's expertly piece-y look here—look for stylists and cuts on Instagram where you can find people who have similar hair textures to you or barbers who tend to cut in the styles you prefer. For the perfect haircut, not just any 'ole barber will do.

Toss Out the Old-School Gel

One of Rob's patented looks is tousled on top but smooth on the sides. "When people think 'smoothed sides,' they often want to go for a gel but that's not actually your best bet. Gel is going to make your hair crispy and immovable."

Instead, use a lighter weight, like Oribe's gel-serum, which has the benefit of a gel hold without the permanent structure. Run your fingers through your hair like you might every so often during the day. "A lot of guys could really use a bit of styling on the sides," says DeZarate. "Otherwise it can get a little poufy." For your everyday vibe, just a little product is all you really need.

Start From the Back and Work Up

For a more polished or formal look like this one, that little bit heavier of a product can come in handy. You'll need it to keep that lift in place all night. But thick products should be applied with intention and sparingly. "Make sure you’re applying it evenly," says DeZarate. For the ultimate inside-celeb-groomer's secret, this intense pomade is a vital weapon for a stay-put style.

"Completely rub the product into your hands. If you can see it on your hands you will see it in your hair. This prevents any hair goops or sticky spots."

Once you have the product ready to go on your hands, start from the back of your head and move toward the front. This helps with an even, careful spread and if there do happen to be goops, they'll be easily disguised on the back of your head.

Try Product Cocktailing for Textures

Pattinson is a master of this kind of two-texture vibe that a lot of hair textures and styles can pull off. The top is pieced and tousled, but the sides are pushed back.

This is where something DeZarate calls "product cocktailing" comes into use: You use different products for different spots on your head. This is useful for this particular style and more generally for people with differently textured hair on different parts of their head.

On top, use something with a little shine and movable hold, like creams and those gel-serums. On the sides, you can use a thicker product, like R+Co's flexible gel. "Layering these two products gives you the hold you want while still staying flexible," she says.

* Texture Sprays Make All the Difference

Polished hairstyles used to be greasy, crispy, and all around stiff. But, alas! Hair products are much better now and you do not need a full head of hardened gel to make it so.

For this kind of Fancy Rob look, go for something that has a bit of hold and a bit of texture, like a pomade or a spray gel (which gives you much more control than a standard gel). To finish off any style, DeZarate recommends a good texture spray. This will keep your hair contained without the crunch.

Keep Your Buzz Cut Clean on the Edges

During quarantine especially, a lot of guys have been going from 5 months of grown out hair to a straight-up buzz cut. We can't blame 'em. When the cuts are minimal, your day-to-day styling can feel a lot easier with a buzz.

But to keep it looking sharp as it grows out, DeZarate says to make sure you maintain keeping the hair behind your ears and at the nape of your neck nice and short. This is the first thing to make a short cut look messy, and keeping a clean shape around the head means the cut will last longer.

Ideally, you'd get it shaped up at the barber every two months. Less ideally, you get someone to help you trim at home. (We will not be held responsible for those results, however.)

Season Your Hair—Don't Douse It

Although of course Rob looks good with nearly any length style, it can be harder to pull off (and maintain) the longer hair looks. Robert Pattinson's hair tends to be wavy and without frizz, but that is not the case for everyone. What is the case for nearly everyone? This easy shape.

Short on the sides. A little longer on the top. A good cut and a light texture spray is all you need to have a solid, clean hairstyle every single day. Plus, hot tip on that texture spray: Always apply it dry and channel your inner Salt Bae.

"Pull back and hold the spray bottle at least 8 inches from your head," says DeZarate. "This gives yourself room to apply it evenly. You want to hold the spray high like you're seasoning your food." Or, in this case, seasoning...your hair? But truly, this technique helps get an even coating without any sticky spots.

No idea what kind of product to start with? Every guy would be better off with a light salt spray in his possession. It works for nearly every hair texture and style.

Get a Good Vitamin

This perfectly medium-length, expertly coiffed hair is the perfect example of just how good Rob Pattinson's hair is. But it also starts with a solid head of hair, which could use more than just a solid haircut.

"It actually really helps to look into vitamins that help your hair grow," says DeZarate. "Look for supplements with Omega-3s and Biotin." She also recommends looking into something like Nutrafol, which help boost signs of hair thinning and loss.

Maybe we can't all have hair like Rob Pattinson, but we sure as hell can try.
