The Newmarket courthouse is a bit dimmer these days after the sometimes grim building lost one of its shining lights.

Ryan Stevenson, a special constable, known for his well-built physique and arm sleeve tattoos would be the first to help someone find their way around the courthouse or lend a hand, died last month.

His employer, York Regional Police would not comment on how he passed; however, a number of those who knew him and details of the case said it’s being treated as a suicide.

An imposing figure, Stevenson was known as someone who brought not only professionalism, kindness, a firm hand and decorum to the four-storey building, where good news often comes in short supply.

He was not only known for his professionalism with lawyers, witnesses and visitors, but also with inmates and suspects, who he treated respectfully and fairly, according to lawyer Don Carter, who’s been working in the building for 27 years.

Carter recalled an incident when one of his clients was upset after receiving a lengthy jail sentence. Stevenson calmed the client and diffused the situation.

“He went over and had a quiet chat with him, called him by his first name, he dealt with him respectfully and kindly, it was really a sight to see,” he said. “I thought to myself, at the time, there were so many ways he could have handled the situation, but he took the high road, he treated my client like a human being, with respect, dignity, compassion and kindness.”

He’s not the only one to sing Stevenson’s praises when it came to his work in the court.

Al Noble, a now retired court services officer for 13 years, said Stevenson may have looked rough and tough, but he was actually a big "pussy cat."

“He treated people incarcerated with dignity, he treated them like a human being should,” he said. “I always admired him for that."
