When someone wonders how to get thicker hair, it can mean one of two things: Either our guy is losing his hair and he wants to actively reverse this, or he simply want to give their hair the appearance of greater density. They're not mutually exclusive, of course—if you're waging war against balding you probably want thicker hair any way you can get it. But they are two distinct approaches.

There's a whole universe of products to accomplish both of these goals, ranging from shampoos and stylers to supplements and prescriptions (if that’s your journey.) Here are six answers to the question of how to get thicker hair, whether you’re looking to actually re-sprout lost hairs, fortifying your existing follicles, or master the smoke-and-mirrors methods.

1. Get a prescription.

Here's one obvious solution: Talk to your dermatologist about the various proven hair loss remedies. Many of them can help restore recently lost hair (up to three years, but the sooner the better), and can significantly slow future loss.

Many companies like Hims, Keeps, and Roman even have docs on demand who can help prescribe the proper remedies to you (and then they ship them to your door). The doctor’s input is imperative, though, in order to help you find a safe, effective solution. Chances are, you’ll discuss things like:

Finasteride: The generic term for Propecia, which inhibits the testosterone byproduct that suffocates hair follicles. It helps restore recently lost hair and significantly slows hair loss at the temples. It is ingested, in pill form, and requires close observation by your doctor, since a small percentage of men experience sexual side effects.

Minoxidil: The generic for Rogaine, which increases nutrient delivery to the hair follicles by opening blood vessels throughout the scalp. It also restores recently lost hair and significantly impacts the crown area. You use it as liquid drops or a topical foam.

Platelet-Rich Plasma: Requires you to provide blood samples, from which your plasma is extracted and then injected into your scalp (really). The growth factors in your plasma stimulate regrowth of recently lost hair.

2. Use texturizing or volumizing stylers

Think of texturized hair as a giant pile of unfolded clothes: it fills up more space than a stack of neatly pressed and folded clothes. That’s what texturizing  and volumizing clays, pastes, and sprays will all do.

Similarly, if you use dry shampoo on the mornings you don’t wash, then you’ll notice a nice, buoyant lift to your hair. That’s because it soaks up all the oils that weigh down each strand (these oils gather right at the root, around the scalp). You can follow it with a dry-application texturizing clay for even more lift.

3. Shampoo every other day.

You already know you shouldn't be shampooing daily. And most guys should only wash two or three times per week. However, if thickness is your main goal, then it might be worth shampooing your hair more often, maybe every other day, and using dry shampoo in between. Excessive shampooing can parch the hair by over-stripping its oils. But it also gives hair greater volume, since there is less oil to weigh it down.

4. Use volumizing shampoos and thickening conditioners.

Conditioners keep hair healthy and stylable, but thickening conditioners take it a step further by pumping proteins into the hair. In addition to nourishing each strand, they also give your hair a temporary fullness.

Because shampoos help strip oils and lift the hair, they are inherently volumizing. But there are products on the market that go beyond this, like Briogeo's, which coats each strand in maltodextrin, a natural starch, to give each follicle tiny bit of separation and a life of its own.

It’s best to use these in the morning, because there’s no use thickening your hair before you go to bed, right?

5. Consider a supplement.

There are an incredible number of nutrients touted to promote thicker hair, but you can keep it simple, because all of the most-touted ones are included Nutrafol. In addition to saw palmetto and biotin, probably the two most-frequently recommended, the company's hair supplement is packed with 19 other vitamins and minerals that help stimulate healthy hair growth from the inside out: zinc, selenium, Vitamins A, C, and D, ashwagandha, and more.

6. Use an ionic hair dryer (with a heat protector).

Using a standard hair dryer is not recommended for people with thin hair that's susceptible to heat damage. It's too easy to fry your hair beyond repair. However, hair dryers are also terrific tools for getting extra volume and fullness in the hair. So use an ionic hair dryer, which uses space-age tech—and much less heat—to dry hair.

Secondly, coat your hair with a heat protection spray prior to drying. This will give your strands a shield from the hot air—it's extra insurance against dried-out frizz.
