You’ve probably heard the hype, but why is silk good for hair? Aside from being ultra-luxurious and a true pillar on your self-care journey, we’re on a mission to find out if it offers any real benefit. Yes, sleeping on silk makes us feel like a princess, but what are the benefits it really offers? Why even use silk hair accessories? We chatted with an expert on the topic to find out more!

About the Expert

Sumana Jayanth is the founder of hair accessories brand Damn Gina.

Silk Hair Benefits

We reached out to Sumana Jayanth, the proud founder of Damn Gina, who started the company after traveling the world and working in fashion (okay, we’re already sold). As Jayanth tells us, silk for hair is a sure thing. “The three main benefits of silk accessories include protecting from tangles, frizz, and breakage while keeping the scalp cool and nourished. Considering the amount of damage our hair is exposed to via hair care tools and products, it is incredibly important to incorporate silk accessories into the hair care routine,” she shares.

If you splurge on one silk purchase, make it a pillowcase. “Hair can get easily tangled, especially while we sleep which is what can cause it to break. Silk is a natural fiber and apart from its smooth surface, it is also made up of amino acids and keratin that can help with your hair’s health. The smooth surface makes sure that there is no friction,” Jayanth explains.

Who Benefits the Most From Silk Accessories?

“Textured hair is more prone to breakage than straight hair so the less friction, the better,” Jayanth confirms. “Due to its fragile nature, natural hair can certainly benefit the most whether that be with silk scrunchies, hats, or even pillowcases. The silky surface makes sure that there is no friction and helps prevent the hair from further breakage or damage.”

While curly people have the most to gain from draping their strands in silk, these benefits are by no means limited. “Essentially all hair types can certainly benefit from using silk hair accessories,” she adds.
