There’s one thing you can always count on in August: sweltering. This month especially it’s important to get that hair off your neck — and we found just the fun and practical  hair accessories to do it in style. Options abound from hair pins in pretty patterns and classics like barrettes to snazzy headbands and yes, even ‘80s throwbacks like the banana clip and the scrunchie. Here are a few of the best designs out there this summer to cool you off — and even give you a welcome chance to skip shampooing for a day.

Sleek and elegant, the chignon is such a simple and classic solution, and it’s incredibly easy when you use the Skinny Flex Chignon Hair Pin ($24 on franceluxe.com). Handcrafted in France, the “Onyx” version is polished to a gorgeous sheen, and looks effortlessly beautiful holding your hair in a simple bun. Bonus: It works with all hair types, no matter how thick or thin, curly or straight.

Inspired to do a half-up, half-down style? The Tortoise Clip Duo ($12 on shopbaleen.com ) in “Checkered” is made of renewable wood pulp-based material and it’s perfect for pulling back the sides of your hair—into either one clip at the back of your head or one of each side, depending on the thickness of your hair.

When you’re ready to get dressy, reach for Lulus Medusa Gold and Green Snake Hair Clips ($18 on lulus.com ). Shaped like sleek serpents with striking green rhinestones as eyes, they do double duty as ornaments and fasteners to keep your hair held tight into a ponytail.

On the less ornamental side, hair claws can sometimes be as ugly as their name — but they don’t need to be. J. Crew’s Large Claw Hair Clip in tortoise ($24.50 on jcrew.com ) proves as much. It’s made of shiny, hand-cut Italian tortoise that’s been shaped and polished at a mill in France. Or opt for its petite sisters: the Mini Claw Clip Two-pack ($22.50 on jcrew.com ). Use them like the larger version — either together in different places, or just use one for smaller sections of hair.

Remember the banana clip? Well, it’s back from the ‘80s to proclaim its status as the precursor to the hair claw and butterfly clips. If you can find an attractive one, use it to create a ponytail (which makes hair cascade down gracefully) or a loose updo. I love the Anthropologie Marie Banana Hair Clips ($25 for a set of 3 on poshmark.com), in three cool patterns at a terrific price.

Also back from the ‘80s: The scrunchie. But this time it’s far slimmer, and it’s gotten a fabric upgrade. Silke London’s Silk Hair Ties ($39 on neimanmarcus.com) are a perfect example. They’re made of 100% pure silk over a super-strength elastic, which means they glide over hair and never cause damage when you’re putting hair up into a pony, a bun, or braid.

And speaking of  fabric,  one of the easiest options is the headband. For everyday, the Rita Headband Artisan Collection. ($17.50 on arunaproject.com) is comfy for your hair and slows down sweating. These were designed in collaboration with the Aruna Artisans (hence the cool patterns), and are made from recycled polyester, are machine washable, and Fair Trade-verified.

On the higher end of that same trend sits the Prada’s Striped Knot Headband ($975 on bergdorfgoodman.com). The hot orange and bright blue, multicolor striped headband with a knot accent and ruched stretch backing is made in Italy.
