To help you find the perfect match for your hair, we tried the best hydration-boosting formulas that claim to repair and enhance shine, and leave locks looking red carpet-worthy.
What causes dry hair?
As we age, hair starts to become weaker and duller, and therefore is more prone to dryness. Overuse of heated hair tools and exposure to harmful UV rays will also contribute to damaged hair.
“Like your skin, UV rays can really dry out your hair. UV rays act on hair much like bleach – they degrade its protein structure and can make strands brittle, prone to breakage and overly porous,” says Anabel Kingsley, trichologist at Philip Kingsley.
There's a limit to how much products can improve the situation, but finding the right shampoo for your hair type can make a visible difference.
“Once it leaves the scalp, hair is technically dead tissue. However, hydrating products will definitely help to rehydrate hair, and heat protectors and products with UV filters will help to stop dryness from occurring in the first place,” says Kingsley.
How we test
Our panel of 317 testers – with a range of hair types, from straight to coiled – tried 24 shampoos claiming to improve dry hair. They evaluated how well each shampoo hydrated and cleaned hair, as well as the overall look to ends after the trial.
In the Hearst Institute lab, we used a Dia-stron instrument to measure how smooth and hydrated hair became after being washed and dried with the product.
We’ve made a note of whether each shampoo below contains parabens, silicones or sulphates, so you can find the one most suitable for your hair.
