Looking to switch up your hair colour as the weather turns? Vogue breaks down all of the major trends for autumn 2022.

Summer hair extended

Perhaps the simplest trend to get onboard with is bringing out the naturally lighter colour your hair has picked up during the summer. Hairstylist and colourist Adam Reed explains: “It’s all about warmth this season – with shades ranging from marmalade to burnt toffee to corn. There’s a bit of a backlash against all of the pastels we’ve seen.” So what should you ask for in the salon? “Adding golden beige and warmer reds will give a really amazing density and richness.”

Deep brunette

This autumn’s take on brunette is particularly dark. “We’ll be seeing a lot of rich, luxurious, nearly black brunettes,” says George Northwood. “Think timeless beauties like Ali MacGraw in Love Story, or Zendaya for a more contemporary take.” Northwood also says dark brunette hair – in addition to being “innately chic” – can “enhance the skin’s natural undertones”.

Blonde with a twist

Northwood predicts that double-processed blonde will get a fresh twist this season with the addition of a strawberry base. “Kelly Reilly in Yellowstone is worth referencing,” he explains, before warning that this colour is anything but low-maintenance. “Regular glosses will be necessary to maintain condition and vibrance.” Hairstylist Andrew Fitzsimons also feels autumn will be strawberry blonde’s moment. “It’s such a dynamic shade, and a great colour for autumn because the warm tones are flattering on almost anyone.” On the flip slide, Wood also predicts that some clients will be after “bright, vivid, luminous blondes that are seamlessly executed with no visible regrowth”, similar to the hair he did for Burberry’s autumn/winter 2023 catwalk. “This sort of blonde has an Upper East Side feel to it – think Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy in the ’90s – with minimal salon visits required if applied correctly.”
