Super Styling: The Return Of The Big Bouncy Blowdry - ELLE

jembutikal.blogspot.com

Farewell poker straight Y2K hair, because according to this season’s catwalks we’re set to be styling ourselves bigger, bouncier and back a decade, channelling the original Supermodels of the 1990s. As usual TikTok is all over it, with hot rollers replacing hair straighteners as the must-have tool of the season, and thickening, volume-boosting layers being chopped into previously razor straight bobs.

When you think of that iconic period in fashion and beauty it’s impossible not to think of the hair: ‘big, radiant, seductive glamour,’ says Daniel Kaner, Oribe Co-Founder and President. The hair care brand’s other Co-Founder, Oribe Canales, was the man behind so many of the shoots, shows and styles we associate with that era, working with the names that go hand-in-hand with Supermodel hair - Cindy, Claudia, Naomi, Christy and more - ‘bringing his signature glamour, and a special wink and smile that were so distinctly his.’

From Versace campaigns, to Jennifer Lopez’s hair in that green dress, to 36 consecutive ELLE covers (!), Oribe's obsession with high-glamour hair set the tone for the decade.

2022's return of the Supermodel style of course comes with a modern update. It’s less ‘done’ and more fun. ‘The look translated to today’s styles has no rules,’ says Kaner. ‘From Kaia Gerber modelling big looks that her mother brought to fame, or Timothee Chalamet’s dramatic volume and tousled curls.’

‘I’ve definitely seen people wanting to make more of an effort with their hair,’ agrees session hairstylist Anna Cofone. ‘I think after multiple lockdowns and returning to work, we're all wanting to dress up again.’ Taking the lead from shows like Tom Ford and Vetements, the new big hair vibe is about glamour and volume, but with perhaps a little less hairspray than before.

That’s not to say you won’t need some help from product to take your hair to Super levels. ‘Using a volumising spray at the roots will give your hair guts and volume,’ says Anna. 'Then a texturising spray helps to lift and add that modern texture.’ She also stresses the importance of prep to make the style last. ‘A weightless primer will shield the hair from thermal damage, whilst also moisturising,’ she tells ELLE UK. Bear your brush of choice in mind too: a vent brush is best to add volume at the roots, a natural bristle brush is better for smoothing out lengths.

That signature 1990s up-do (think Cindy for Calvin, or Pamela for Baywatch) is where hair spray IS your friend. The finished result looks undone and easy, thrown up with a claw clip, but to ensure it keeps height and texture give a liberal spray of the stuff to set it in place. And short styles can get in on the action too, channeling Linda Evangelista or Christy Turlington. Here, a pomade rather than a spray will help to create that recognisable, piece-y finish.
