Surefire tips for preventing hat hair - SFGate

If you ride a bicycle, rollerblade, or engage in any other mildly-dangerous activity before work that requires a helmet, you’re all too familiar with the issue of preventing the dreaded “helmet hair” (I myself am a life-long horse rider). This conundrum is especially hard for me because I have the kind of hair which belongs more on Simba than it does on a human: After I take off my helmet, the bottom half of my hair is a curly, wild mess while the parts above my ears are flat, stuck to my face, and somewhat sweaty.

Ok, a lot sweaty.

Over the years, I’ve developed a routine which helps to tame the helmet hair and make me look somewhat like I belong in a boardroom. It might not be quite the same as a shower and a hairdryer, but it’s enough that most colleagues can’t tell if I’ve been riding or not that morning. Either that or they have just become waaaaay more polite over the years.

Here’s your five step process to banishing helmet hair and appearing at the office all chic and professional.

Dry shampoo like a pro

First up: dry shampoo. I see the eye rolls already. I know that dry shampoo isn’t exactly a revelation, but you’ve gotta get the right one for your hair. Klorane dry shampoo is revered by the French, and I’ve found it works really well for me as well. It doesn’t leave streaks of color, and is lightweight enough that it adds some texture to my hair without making it feel sticky or straw-like.

Secondly, get acquainted with dry shampoo before you put your helmet (or hat) on. That way, it absorbs some of the sweat and helmet odor from your hair as you work out. Doing it beforehand leaves you with more volume in less time than if you spray it all over your head once you’re done. And time is of the essence if you want to march into that office early, without anyone ever knowing you were pouring sweat 45 minutes beforehand.

No-mark hair elastics

If you need to tie your hair up while you’re exercising, these no-kink coiled hair elastics are seriously the only choice. I like to secure a ponytail with one, and then twist my hair around into a bun, and use a second elastic to tie that in place.

You won’t get the weird wavy line around the top of your head that you get from traditional elastics, but the bun will give you a little bit of movement once you’ve loosened and combed through it.

You can also braid your hair if you’re more patient than me (and if you have enviable dexterity in your hands).

Beach spray

Most of us don’t have pin-straight hair. If you do, your biggest concern is probably some volume. In which case you should look into a volumizing hair regime, and learn the fine art of backcombing.

For anyone with curls or waves though, post exercise is not the time to be worrying about where your GHDs are. Instead, you’re going to have to embrace the wave. The hair elastics and bun like I mentioned above are a good start, and now you need to pump it up a bit.

Lightly spritz your hair with some plain water (a small portable spray bottle is useful here) and a texturizing beach spray before you start your workout. When you take the elastics out, give your hair a good shake and then comb through with your fingers or a wide toothed comb.

Hair wrap

If there’s a way to protect your hair from sweat, embrace it. A hair wrap adds an extra layer of protection against sweat and helps to stop the top part of your hair from looking glued to your forehand, especially when paired with the dry shampoo.

Adding a hair wrap underneath your helmet can help to stop friction, and means that you’ll have less of the frizz and fewer tangles.

Plus it helps to protect your hair follicles from damage in the long run. So that means your hair should become easier to manage over time as you’re not constantly rubbing and damaging it. And healthy hair is muuuch easier to style, fresh out of a helmet or not.

Helmet deodorizer

Because nobody wants stinky helmet hair. These helmet-cleaning sprays are magical. Just spray it on, wipe it off, and rest easy knowing that you aren’t shoving your hair into six-month-old sweat every morning.
