A lock of George Washington’s mane has sold for a hair shy of $40,000.
The Founding Father’s delicate strands fetched $39,921.60 in the Leland’s auction, which started at $1,000 and ended after 45 bids – beating the $35,763.60 a similar lock went for in February 2019.
Washington’s hair, which was believed to have been removed from the first president close to or after his death in 1799 at age 67, was stored in a handmade brass and glass locket.
“This well documented specimen is accompanied by a handwritten letter stating ‘General Washington’s hair — cut from his head in the year 1799 by Mr. John Pierie of Philadelphia, from whom I received it, Fr. Hopkinson, Philada: June 28th, 1836,’” the auction house said in the closed listing.
“Artifacts associated with the nation’s first president are highly coveted by museums, history buffs, and memorabilia collectors alike,” it added.
The winning bid was made on Friday.
