Maddie Zamora was planning to open a salon in Fall 2020 when life changed and she decided to stay home with her children instead. But now she is ready to get back to what she loves.

She recently has taken over the previous House of Hair salon at 2301 Frederica Street and is transforming it into Salon Meraki.

“The previous owners of House of Hair have been absolutely wonderful to work with during this transition of taking over their hair salon of 40+ years,” she said. “The building has amazing characteristics and fits the ideas in my head of what I would like to turn this salon into.”

Zamora said she decided to change the name solely for the fact that she plans on completely updating and revamping the whole salon to give it a new feel and more of a modern look.

She chose the name because the meaning of the Greek word ‘Meraki’ is to do something with soul, passion, creativity, or love.

“I’m so passionate about what I do and I want to share the love of what I do with everyone else in this town,” Zamora said. “I want them to feel the creative minds at work when they enter our salon.”

Zamora, who said she has always been a very self-driven individual with the motivation to do bigger things in life, said she never wanted to settle or take the easier route with anything she chooses to do in life.

“I think everything in life happens for a reason — every wrong turn, every setback we go through, every hardship all leads us to where we’re meant to be all in God’s time,” she said. “I’ve learned the hard way that no matter how hard I try it will only happen in his time and not mine. I want to share this with other young women that no matter your age or what your goals are in life, you can do it.”

While Zamora does not have an exact opening date yet, she is hoping to be up and running by the beginning or middle of April.

Salon Meraki will be a full-service salon with hair services, waxing, facials, spray tans, airbrush makeup for special events, lash extensions/lash lift + tint, massages, and sew-in extensions.

Zamora is currently still hiring, as she has two private rooms available and four other stations she still needs to fill. She is looking for other stylists, an esthetician, and a possible massage therapist.

“Opening up a salon was something I had always planned from the very beginning of my hair career,” she said. “I never knew it would happen so quickly but once an opportunity comes my way I’m eager to take it and run.”
