Just when I think I’ve tried (almost) every hair mask known to man, another brand arises with some wild, innovative product different from anything I’ve tried prior. Seriously, where do they come up with this stuff? The latest? An ice cream hair mask. Yes, you read that correctly.

As soon as a rep from the brand NaturAll reached out to me about reviewing said product, my interest was obviously piqued. Unfortunately, however, the masks aren’t edible. So, while indeed tempting with the avocado-infused formulas, this would be solely a hair operation.

The Products

The rep was kind enough to send along the brand’s Deep Conditioner Bundle ($65), featuring all five of the trademarked Ice Cream Treatment masks. The bundle includes, Original Dry Solution, Hydrating, Strengthening, Repairing and Curl-Defining. One look at the brand’s website, and you can see the products are primarily aimed at girls with curly or textured hair. Hence its name, the mission of the company is for women to embrace their natural hair, and help it look healthy, bouncy and bountiful. I have curly hair, so I looked forward to diving in!

Because I only wash my hair once a week, I knew it would take more than a month to make my way through all these bad boys. Therefore, I chose to base this review on one mask alone. I went with the Strengthening (an avocado base with Jamaican black castor oil, moringa-monoi and carrot – $13.50).

The Experience

After taking it out of the freezer (it should be frozen from the time you receive the package until shortly before use), I briefly put it under hot water so that it would thaw enough for application, but still remain mostly frozen. Its consistency appeared much less like a hair mask and more like a melting popsicle. Oddly enough, it had this raw citrus smell, despite having no citrusy ingredients. If I could describe the aroma in two words, it’d be “earthy orange.”

Going into it, I was nervous. Hair masks are tough because most of them weigh down my hair and make it super greasy. I almost never apply above my ends, but the instructions for this product say to divide hair into quadrants and distribute throughout, leaving on for 20-40 minutes. It doesn’t list how much to use, but I used about 1/3 of my packet.

When my 40-minute timer went off, I rinsed out the mask, gave my hair a good brush-through and ran my fingers through hair that felt good as new! That said, there are times my hair feels that way, but feels or styles differently once air-dried.

As the day went on, my curls were surely finding their way. They appeared uniform and there was zero frizz. They looked shiny and healthy. I was into the look, and went from plans to flat-iron once dry, to doing the brand fair justice and wearing my hair au-naturel. I did make one mistake, however (that can help anyone reading this). I had to brush two thick strands mid-dry, and that totally messed up the hair’s rhythm. My part was messed up and I wanted to ensure it fully dried straight down the middle. So once I did the light brushing, those two strands had different curls from the rest. I had to move those pieces behind the ear, to avoid detracting from the aesthetic of the rest.

Bottom Line

There’s no question my hair feels much, much healthier after just one application of this wonder-product. Also, the ingredients list is stellar. Boasting avocado as its first in each formula, you know you’re getting the good stuff. In addition, the remainder of each mask’s ingredients are “from farm to freezer,” as the packaging states, and features no silicones, phthalates, sulfates or parabens. The brand is also cruelty-free. They boast other collections as well, if you’re impressed with the masks. Also, approximately three uses for $13 makes each treatment about $4—not too shabby!

I don’t know how hair will look flat-ironed after using this mask. While my hair is softer and shinier, I don’t know if the heat from the iron will have a greasy effect on the hair. But what I can say is if you’re planning to start wearing your hair naturally, this is definitely a good place to start!
