Hi, consider this a public service announcement for anyone who regularly dyes their hair: You should 100 percent consider using an ammonia-free hair dye. Hear me out. Even though ammonia (a chemical that helps dye penetrate your strands) has been used in hair dye for years, it's actually super harsh—like harsh enough that it can not only irritate TF out of your scalp, but also dry out and potentially damage your hair, says Meri Kate O'Connor, celebrity colorist at Loft 647 in West Hollywood. That doesn't mean you need to cut back on your box dye habit though—it just means you should be aware of a gentler, safer option if you do want to swap.

Wait, what even is ammonia?

Ammonia is a chemical that helps open up the hair cuticle (aka the outer layer of your hair), allowing the dye to reach allll the way into the cortex (the thickest layer of your hair). It basically helps ensure that your dye is being fully absorbed into your hair, versus just sitting on the surface of your hair. And while wanting richer, longer-lasting hair dye is totally understandable, it's still important to keep in mind that ammonia can be super drying, and even damaging, in the longterm—especially if you're someone who already regularly dyes and chemically treats their hair. That's not to say that ammonia needs to be avoided at all costs—but it is a good idea to consider alternatives if/when you can.

Is ammonia-free hair dye just as effective?

Even though ammonia-free dyes of the past have been known to wash out fast or not look as vibrant, the modern formulas are actually super effective. "You can do everything with ammonia-free dye that you usually can with ammonia-containing due—it's just so much better for the hair in general because it's less damaging," says O'Connor. The only downside? Most ammonia-free hair dyes are a tad more expensive than traditional formulas, but if you think of it as an investment in your hair health, it's pretty worth it IMO. Keep scrolling for the 12 best ammonia-free hair dyes out there right now, including everything from temporary tints to permanent shades.
