Instead of receiving gifts on his birthday, 15-year-old Cordin Ledger of Jacksonville gave the gift of love by getting a haircut — but it wasn’t the typical styling appointment.

Ledger has been growing his hair for the past year and decided to cut it to donate to Children with Hair Loss — a charity that provides wigs for children who have battled cancer and those born with alopecia universalies, a medical condition involving the loss of body hair.

“I feel bad for those people. They’re wishing they had hair,” Ledger said.

In addition to the inspiration of being able to provide for others, Ledger saw his own mother, Jamie Ledger, battle cancer — further inspiring him to donate.

“My mom did have cancer, but she didn’t have chemo,” he said.

He knows others who have gone through chemotherapy and experienced hair loss.

The charity requires hair be at least 8 inches in length; Ledger was able to donate 10 inches’ worth.

While Ledger was sitting nervously Saturday in the chair at Pizzazz Salon on Morton Avenue, stylist Angela Hadden used a ruler to carefully measure the length. She was familiar with the process and has another customer who will grow her hair long and cut it for donation every two years.

Ledger, a Jacksonville High School student, said summer was the hardest part about having long hair.

“It would be distracting and it has been a bit bothersome,” he said.

His mom, Jamie Ledger, said she is thankful that he is being proactive and is proud of the decision to donate, fully supporting his decision.

“We researched it together [and] chose the best one,” she said.

“I think it’s a great idea and I’m proud of him.”
