  • Demi Moore revealed why she’ll never cut her long hair.
  • She’s resisting the idea that older women should have shorter styles.
  • “It made me feel like, well, if it can grow and it’s not unhealthy, then why shouldn’t we?” she said.

In the way of signature looks, Demi Moore’s dark Rapunzel-like tresses might be the pinnacle. The 59-year-old has rocked her fair share of styles over the years, but the long hair feels most like her—which is why she’s sticking with it, regardless of her age.

“I remember hearing someone say that when women get older, they shouldn’t have long hair. And something about that stuck with me,” she recently told People. “Like who says? It made me feel like, well, if it can grow and it’s not unhealthy, then why shouldn’t we? I’m not comfortable with rules that don’t seem to have any real meaning or justification.”

The Ghost star is doing the same rule-breaking with her latest swimwear collaboration with Andie, which aims to empower women and change the idea that they “become less desirable with age” by giving them suits they feel sexy and comfortable in.

As for her long mane, Moore learned to love it the hard way, after constantly changing it to keep up with the trends. Not to mention, her work as an actress was always requiring a new ’do—but not anymore.

“I’ve done everything to my hair. I’ve shaved it. I’ve dyed it. I’ve had a bob,” she said. “I think now that I’m older, I also know I don’t have anything to prove. So if they really need my hair different, they can give me a wig.” To her, changing it now isn’t worth the risk of it not growing back. To keep it strong and shiny, she makes sure to give it the attention (or lack thereof, in some cases) that it requires.

“When I’m not working, I try to do as little to it as possible. It’s stressful even having someone touch it. If I don’t have anywhere to go, I don’t put heat on it—I just try to let it do its own thing. And I don’t wash it too often,” she explained. “I get regular tiny trims. The rest comes from the inside out. You have to eat well, all those things.”

The actress also recently opened up about turning 60 soon, and how she’s excited for it. She said she’s “not being defined by a number and instead being defined by my experience,” adding: “You hit 59 and you’re already thinking, ‘Well, I’m going to be 60.’ It feels very liberating. When I think of my grandmother at 60, she in a way seemed to be already resigned to being old. But I feel, in so many ways, more alive and present than ever.”

Although it may seem silly, Moore’s outlook—and her long hair—are making a difference in the way we talk about aging. After all, change requires resistance–and her choice not to cut her locks and embrace turning 60 is certainly a form of it.
