Review: I Tested Out the New Shark HyperAIR™ Hair Dryer & Styler and It’s Seriously Impressive - Allure Magazine

The Shark HyperAIR™ Hair Dryer is a compact, barrel-shaped device that fits nicely in my hand, isn’t too heavy, and doesn’t scream in my ear. (A major pet peeve is when products are made to fulfill an aesthetic vision while sacrificing functionality. Also, I have small hands, so fumbling my grip is a constant frustration.) The heat and airflow buttons are on the rear of the main barrel, not on the handle, which is nice because I hate accidentally switching settings mid-blowout.

The first thing I noticed when I turned it on is that the air is indeed very fast — hyper fast, even. That’s important in order to minimize heat damage, because the less time you spend subjecting your hair to heat, the less damage it’ll incur. And faster air means quicker dry time. It’s as simple as that.

Next up: all the innovative attachments. Hairdryer attachments are often overlooked by hairstyling noobs, but they are truly invaluable accessories. The Shark HyperAIR™ rethinks them as styling assistants. One really unique feature is the way the attachments interact with the tool. With HyperAir Technology, the dryer actually recognizes which attachment is connected and automatically changes its heat and airflow settings in lockstep. Hence, the whole IQ part of the system.

Most eye-catching among the attachments is the Shark™ IQ Styling Brush. It gives you the ease of a trendy dryer-brush without the commitment to a separate device. The flexible bristles really help detangle and smooth hair as the air flows through it at a controlled speed, making it easy to create a sleek blowout single-handed. Also, the brush head can rotate, so styling the back of your head is blessedly easy.

The Shark™ IQ Curl-Defining Diffuser also has a few tricks up its sleeve. Namely, it caters to short and long, wavy, curly, and coily hair by way of extendable prongs. Slide the lever right on the side to retract the prongs for shorter or finer hair and less heat on the scalp. Slide the lever left to extend for reaching into longer hair and lifting at the root. It gives you so much more control with textured styles that traditional diffusers don’t. Hard truth: Not all diffusers are created equal.
