Nicole Richie’s 40th birthday celebration nearly went up in smoke when her hair caught fire while she was blowing out her candles.
In a short video posted to her Instagram Tuesday, the “Simple Life” alum was seen leaning over her birthday cake while making a wish when a few strands of her hair dangerously dangled over the flames.
At first, Richie didn’t seem to notice and even smiled briefly, but her joy quickly turned to panic when her friends started screaming, with one even reaching out to try and stop the flames from engulfing the birthday girl. Richie then screeched as she quickly went to pat out the flames before the video cut out.
Fortunately, the House of Harlow founder seemed to have dodged any serious burns and even made a joke about singeing her blonde curls.
“Well… so far 40 is 🔥,” she captioned the video.
Richie’s famous friends reacted to the birthday cake catastrophe by taking to the comments section of her post.
“‘Twas a hot hot hot night,” celeb stylist Jamie Mizrahi wrote.
“My heart just dropped!!!!” Kelly Rowland commented.
“HBD!!! I hope you’re okay! ❤️,” Ellen Pompeo added.
“Oh my gawwwd,” Amy Schumer wrote.
“I feel awful for laughing I’m sry also happy birthday!!!” Antoni Porowski commented.
Olivia Palermo, Chelsea Handler and Zooey Deschanel also commented with birthday wishes, while Richie’s husband, Joel Madden, jokingly quoted her longtime pal Paris Hilton, writing, “That’s hot.”
Richie rocked an off-the-shoulder black top accessorized with a stack of necklaces for the occasion. She turned 40 Tuesday.
