If you have curly hair, you know the struggle can be real. In my humble opinion, it’s both a blessing and a curse. If you’re a curly girl like me, you know that any expert advice that saves you time and reduces the chances of frizz is well worth a try. After all, it takes a lot to perfect a curly mane (no, I didn’t wake up like this).

So, when this curly hair drying trend took over the internet, I had to give it a try. Enter: hair plopping. Sounds silly, I know, but boy oh boy it has made styling my hair a whole lot easier. It’s pretty much fuss-free (if at first you fail, try and try again), it makes my spirals pop, and it helps me avoid leaving the house with that wet dog look I loathe so much.

Even though it’s not really a new invention, it was new to me. And I have to admit, I now plop two to three times a week and end up with flawless curls every single time. Curious yet? Well, you’re in good hands because we asked a celebrity hairstylist to give us the scoop on plopping, how to do it, and why you need to try it ASAP. Keep reading for a quick guide to plopping, including step-by-step instructions.

What is hair plopping?

Plopping is a popular drying technique created with curly and wavy hair types in mind. According to celebrity hairstylist and Ouidad brand ambassador, Irinel de Lèon, the goal of plopping is to absorb excess water and keep frizz to a minimum by using a cotton T-shirt or microfiber towel to dry the hair. I like to consider it a speedy way to air dry my curls without reaching for the diffuser because, if you don’t know, curly girls and traditional bath towels are basically enemies. While it may seem convenient to throw your hair in a cute twisted turban with your bath towel, think again. The friction caused by terry cloth towels can cause major frizz and even breakage—a curly girl no-no.

Another bonus of plopping, in addition to quicker drying curls, is major definition (more on this below) and a way to get your soaking wet hair off of your neck while you finish the rest of your morning routine.

What are the benefits of plopping?

Any method that will safely dry the hair in a shorter amount of time is a win-win in our book, but it turns out plopping is about way more than soaking up water. “Anyone suffering from frizz, lack of definition or unable to keep the spring in your curl pattern should plop their curls,” De Lèon says. “It also creates lift for anyone with finer hair or looser waves because the hair is drying on top of the head rather than being weighed down.” It’s basically a must-try in every curly girl’s routine.

So, how do I plop my hair?

Thankfully, the process of plopping curly hair is relatively simple and straight to the point. Here’s a quick how-to.

  1. Cleanse and condition the hair. Before you plop, you’ll want to use your favorite shampoo and conditioner combo to cleanse and nourish your strands.
  2. Apply your favorite styling product. Here’s where you can customize the routine to your liking. De Lèon recommends a styling cream to boost hydration and definition. If you’re looking for more hold, this is the time to apply a gel.
  3. Grab your T-shirt or towel. Once the product is applied throughout your spirals, you’ll want to lay a T-shirt or microfiber towel on the edge of the bed or a chair with the sleeves of a T-shirt at the end closest to your body, De Lèon says.
  4. Now, it’s time to plop. Once your fabric of choice is in place, it’s time to flip your hair to the front and place the ends of your hair in the middle of your towel or shirt. Next, move your head closer to the towel and then tie the sleeves (or ends) over your neck into a knot or bow. De Lèon says if you’re using a long-sleeved shirt, tuck the remaining sleeves in the front of your head. Voila! You’ve plopped. Truth be told, this may take you some time to master. And the truth is, the more you do it, the better you’ll become. Just be patient and have fun.

If all else fails, there are tons of online tutorials, if you’re more of a visual learner.

I’ve plopped, now what?

De Lèon says it’s common to plop your hair for 10 to 20 minutes. That gives you enough time to get dressed, do your makeup, make a cup of coffee and even diffuse some oils if you please. “Some even plop overnight or plop and then diffuse their hair,” De Lèon says. “You’ve got to experiment with the duration and see what works best for you.” Just note that plopping doesn’t mean that your hair will be fully dried when you take your hair down. Chances are it’s still going to be damp or even wet to the touch when you’re finished, but you can finish by air drying or diffusing if you’re in a hurry.

Bottom line: If you’ve got wavy, curly, or coily hair, plopping is a must-try. It’s a quick and easy way to rid your curls of excess water, add extra definition, and keep your hair up while you get ready for the day. All in all, it’s pretty much a gift to all us mop tops out there.
