It has been revealed that the street outside of Trayvon Martin's high school, Dr. Michael M. Krop Senior High, will be renamed in his honor. The decision was approved by commissioners in Miami this week, which revealed that a portion of NE 16th Street will be renamed after Martin this week.
A government memorandum stated that the 2012 shooting of 17-year-old Martin at the hands of neighborhood watchman George Zimmerman "elicited national conversations about race relations, racial profiling, gun rights, stand your ground laws, and was a catalyst that set nationwide demands for social justice in motion."
Following the 2013 acquittal of Zimmerman, the hashtag #BlackLivesMatter started trending online, which lead to the social justice movement that continues to raise awareness about police brutality and racially-motivated violence around the world.
