In the feature categories, 'Ma Rainey's Black Bottom' collected two awards, for period make-up and period hair styling, while 'Birds of Prey' claimed two trophies for contemporary make-up and contemporary hair styling.
Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, Birds of Prey and Pinocchio claimed awards in the feature competition during the Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild (Local 706) Awards, which were handed out during a virtual presentation shot on the stage at the El Portal Theater in NOHO.
In the feature categories, Ma Rainey's collected two awards, for period make-up and period hair styling, while Birds of Prey claimed two trophies for contemporary make-up and contemporary hair styling. Pinocchio won the award for special make-up effects in a feature.
Ma Rainey's and Pinocchio, along with Emma, Hillbilly Elegy and Mank are nominated for the Oscar for Makeup and Hairstyling. A year ago, Bombshell won three Guild awards on route to an Oscar win.
This year's Guild award winners for series included Bridgerton, The Mandalorian. The Queen's Gambit as well as Saturday Night Live, which won two awards.
Accompanied by a '50s style laugh track, Anthony Anderson hosted the virtual ceremony, with winners and honorees accepting their awards remotely.
Eddie Murphy thanked his make-up and hairstyling teams for "keeping my look together" as he accepted the Distinguished Artisan Award, while presenter Glenn Close said make-up artist and Lifetime Achievement Award recipient Matthew Mungle was her "first call' when she accepted her role in Hillbilly Elegy. And saying that he brings "serenity--and lots of hair spray," Scarlett Johansson saluted her Jojo Rabbit hair stylist, Lifetime Achievement Award recipient Terry Baliel.
The Guild bestowed inaugural Vanguard Awards on Bernadine Anderson (Coming to America), the first woman and woman of color to become a member of the Guild; and Richard Battle, who was on the ground level of theatrical productions being broadcast on PBS in the Wig and Makeup Department. IATSE international president Matthew D. Loeb presented these honors.
Angie Wells sang Danny Boy for an In Memoriam segment.
Before the ceremony, the Guild hosted a one-hour pre-show hosted by Sibley Scoles. She chatted with guests including Local 706 president Julie Socash, who commended members for "stepping up to the plate" this past year amid the pandemic. Lifetime Achievement honoree Baliel reflected on the challenges of The Last Samurai — "we had 500 soldiers everyday for a month" — and a favorite look, Helena Bonham Carter's Red Queen in Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland. Lifetime Achievement honoree Mungle said he became interested in makeup at age 11, and has now spent 41 years in the business.
