President Trump is facing a revolt among senior Republicans in Congress that could lead to him becoming the first US leader to be banned from public office after his impeachment.
Mitch McConnell, the Republican leader in the Senate, is said to be open to convicting the president of the charge of incitement to insurrection in a trial in the upper chamber. Mr Trump is expected to be impeached in a vote due in the House today.
